What in my opinion is the biggest stereotype of video gamers? Well…

They’re young… a.k.a. kids. Of course that’s a relative term right? I mean I’m young to a 45 year old, and I’m a kid to a 89 year old (love you grandma!). By kids I’m talking about teen/pre-teen… 9-13 years old. Not only are they young kids… but with youth comes immaturity. So let’s sum up video gamers as immature kids.

Wrong! How do I know? I don’t know… I just say so cuz I’m a gamer. I’m 35 and married with kids. I have a house, college degree, and three cars. I’m into fitness, reading, movies, music and healthy food. I own my own business and office out of a coffee shop enjoying a soy latte every day. During the day, I dress up like a professional and go to work.

On a weekly basis I network with professionals, and when these professionals want to get to know me they ask me what I do for fun and I say, “I play video games online with people from around the world.” They often reply that their kids do that too, to which I reply, “yeah I know, last night I was doggin’ your son’s mom while he was t-baggin’ me.” Imagine the reactions I get to that.

No I really don’t talk trash to kids, I actually act like a mature adult 95% of the time. I even nag at my own boys when they’re online and act like knot heads. So I don’t fit the stereotype of a gamer and don’t act like those that cause people to associate gamers as immature children.

Yes many people who consider themselves mature, professional adults label gamers as immature kids only because they see that in their own children. However if they took some time to sit down and find out who that is their 12 year old kid just dropped the f-bomb too online, they’d discover it was likely some 20 or 30 something enjoying some recreational gaming after a hard-day’s work putting up with some unqualified manager in a suit, or maybe a college or graduate student taking a study break.

Move from your gaming console to a PC, you might even discover that the average age of gamers is older, likely to be IT professionals, business owners, entrepreneurs, etc.

Even recently a business associate of mine blogged on what a business owner could learn from his favorite PC game, Team Fortress 2.

So even though some of those gamers are your immature kids, I’m pretty sure there are a handful that are educated, employed, tax-paying, blogging moms (angel that’s you!), or dads, or at least pet owners. And it’s you old farts that I look forward playing with every night I sign in!

Blog Banter: What’s the real meaning of life…

Welcome, welcome to the 3rd installment of Blog Banter, the monthly blogging extravaganza headed by bs angel! Blog Banter involves our cozy community of enthusiastic gaming bloggers, a common topic, and a week to post articles pertaining to said topic. The results are quite entertaining and can range from deep insight to ROFLMAO. Any questions about Blog Banter should be directed here. Check out other Blog Banter articles at the bottom of this post! This month’s topic: “What games would you suggest someone play if they wanted to get to know you better?”:

What game represents who I am as a person…this is deep! Unlike BSB belpers, I enjoy playing a bunch of different types of games, however: LIKE BSB belpers, I have only played COD4 since I got it at Christmas. After much thought I decided I’m very similar to Command & Conquer 3. I love the strategy games, where you build cities, towers, civilizations and even take over other empires on occasion. I am a very quiet and patient person and enjoy games that you have to take your time, come up with a strategy and implement.

My business life is very much the same: I want to own everything. I don’t want to work for someone else and see them take all the glory. C&C3 takes it a little far…the whole point is to destroy everything in your path, which I am completely against. In fact I am the exact opposite, I want to take everything in my path and build it bigger and make it stronger. The point is not to make enemies, but friends wherever possible. Life is so much more fun when everyone is making money or having success. I do enjoy the war aspects of C&C or COD4, but am against war if its avoidable, but that is the whole point of playing video games. Playing games is a way to escape reality and do things that you’ve never done before, or be someone that you aren’t normally. How cool is it that I can build my own city or tower the way I want without anyone telling me how to do it? So I say…play whatever you want to play, escape reality and have FUN!

Thanks for listening…

When I was asked about this months subject… what game best describes who you are?… my reaction was, “Crap, I’m going to have to do homework.” I play one game, well, now two since I recently tried out my son’s Christmas gift COD4.

Sidenote: COD4 should be called COD$ cuz that game is money!

So since I only play two games, how would I know what games best describe who I am… cuz shooting aliens, driving SUVs with oversize tires, and fighting political wars are not what I’m about in reality.

The first thing I did was break down a list of what type of games there are? You have: action, fighting, shooter, sports, strategy, puzzle, rpg, simulation, and finally music & party. One of these words jumped out at me right away… strategy. So, I looked into what a strategy game is and what types of games there are. Here’s what I found… not me! It was all about building empires and ruling. Pass! So then I tried RPG, and this time I got a little closer, but the catagory lacked the light-hearted, fun character at the heart of my nature. On my third try I finally found what I was looking for. When I looked under the action catagory, I found a game that I immediately new represented my life (I guess). Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga. I’m all about Star Wars. I believe that even though the saga was based off many myths of our past, there is more truth in those myths than we now understand and believe. Also, one of the lines in Star Wars stuck with me from the first moment I ever saw the original trilogy; it was the line Obi-Wan said to Luke about beliefs being based on perspectives. I have held beliefs before with conviction that were all changed simply because I saw reality from a different perspective. That one point has helped me open my mind up tremendously and see so much more truth in this world. Finally, the game is perfect for me because it’s Lego… which is like saying… hey, this isn’t real or serious. It’s fun, it’s creative, it’s enjoyable!I enjoy a first person shoooter more than anything when I’m playing video games, but that’s not who I am as a real person. I’m all about fun, creativity, and Star Wars.

Happy New Year!  Hope yours kicks ass and you use it to bring all the fun and laughs you wish for!

When someone asked me what I wanted to change in my life for 2008, I wondered… “What would master chief do?”   He’d kick ass of course, and only in a way he’d loved doin’ it!

Well, if it’s good enough for the Chief, it’s good enough for me.  So, I’m using my time and energy in 2008 to make money doing two of the things I love… brand marketing and video games.  I’m a partner at a brand marketing company where we make logo’d stuff for companies. Over the holidays I decided how cool it would be to call on video game developers as my primary customers, and help them promote their products.  I mean, I play video games, my biz partner plays video games, my children play video games, so I guess I have a grasp on what video game users like.

Also, I really want to reach out into the gaming community, at least to the COD4 and Halo gamers, to expand the BSB friend’s list. For me, playing these games online is only fun when I’m playing with fun-spirited, laid back gamers.  I’m not into the trash talk or put downs… for me it’s just a lot of off-the-wall hilarious fun!

Finally, now that I’ve started playing COD4, I promise that in 2008 I will play Halo 3 again… sometime.

Blog Banter: I love you Intellivision!

You remember your first kiss? Not the peck on the cheek you got in kindergarten from the crush who was happy you were the fastest speller at your turn on the chalkboard… the other one… the first really wet one. Yes! That one! So do I… and thank you Lilly Uhler, one of the hottest most sexy human beings to walk this earth… I’ll never forget you as long as I live. You hold that special place in my heart right next to Intellivision!

What?! Yep, remember Intellivision? If I think back to my most memorable gaming experience, nothing stands out more than my life with Intellivision! I think I got my first system when I was 8 years old, and I thought my dad brought some new space age technology home to me. I fell in love!

in_intellivision.gif

While some of my friends were getting their Atari systems and bragging about their pac man, asteroids, centipede, blah blah blah… I was the sole gamer playing my state-of-the-art graphics system Intellivision! And that’s where many of my boy-to-manhood lessons happened. My love for sports, my lust for sci-fi, my affair with space, my thrill for speed and drifting, my skills with a poker face, and my raw passion for challenges in the pixelated realms of my boob tube. Mmmmmm this was surely the purpose of life. I get a rush thinking about it! For what seemed like an eternity I dazzled my grade-school friends with my disc & numeric pad wielding Intellivision gamer skills.

Eventually came real sports, girls, college, marriage, kids, jobs, mortgages, etc… and like so many memories from the past, my Intellivision was left behind to collect dust. And like my game systems, my time for and love of video gaming was gone, but not forgotten.

Then one day… many years later, out of nowhere, like the soft wet lips of one beautiful Lilly Uhler so many years before, I met Goldeneye on the N64… coincidently, it was even today’s very own boffman22 and his group of high school buddies that introduced me to and kept me up late so many nights in the back room at Blockbuster Video store where we’d play quad split screen matches for hours on end on a 19″ tv… and i thought that was heaven!

n64-goldeneye.png

Today, I roll solo (that’s right… no split screens allowed!) with my 42 inches of hd lcd spartan 117… my modern day heaven! And you know what I wonder..? How friggin’ cool is it going to be when I look back and laugh at the old school way we’re playing today!

playermodelashx.jpg I don’t really consider myself that old, so I can’t recall playing any pong or even atari: therefore, my old school most memorable moment was getting the NES for Christmas from my grandma when I was 4. The first game I owned, besides Super Mario Bros., was Popeye. That Christmas morning I played Popeye for hours not caring that I had other presents to open, they were probably socks anyway. This was the start of my addiction.

A more recent memorable moment in gaming was in college when my roomates and I first learned how to use system link on the xbox and hooked up an xbox in 2 different rooms on 2 different TVs. We played Halo for 16 hrs straight, pausing for 30 secs max for bathroom breaks, if were even aware we had to go. We even left the pizza man at the door for at least 5 mins, tuning everything out except the rants from the next bedroom over. -BSB boffman
